2011: Ibidunni joins Ogun Central senatorial race

By Gbenga Akinwunmi
A veteran politician in Abeokuta, Chief Yinka Ibidunni, has announced his intention to vie for the Ogun Central Senatorial seat under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Aside Ibidunni, aspirants who are also vying for the seat currently occupied by the daughter of the former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, are a former member of the House of Representatives, Chief Bode Mustapha, a London-based legal practitioner, Mr Fola Rahman, and the daughter of the late Chief Moshood Abiola, Mrs Lola Abiola-Edewor.

Ibidunni, who is the Special Adviser to Governor Olugbenga Daniel on physically challenged matters, has been advocating for more political positions for the physically challenged in the country. Declaring his senatorial ambition, he described government attitude to issues affecting the physically challenged in the country as very poor.

The aspirant who also contested the same position in 2007 elections but lost to Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello during the primary, submitted that the nation was lacking quality people to man the political affairs of the country.

According to him, “It is a pity in Nigeria that people with one deformity or the other are not being catered for, government’s attitude towards them is very poor, and they are on the point of pity.

“It is not their wish to be like that but people always think they cannot be somewhere better but I tell you, they will do something great for this country if some of us are given a level playing ground.

“There is lack of leadership in this country and we lack people that can take Nigeria to its destination, we need to separate leadership and personality and to separate personalities from positions. But we don’t have many good leaders in this country that is why we have coalition in this country; we need the right people to hold positions of authority in this country.”

Ibidunni who urged Nigerians not to sell their votes in the coming elections, noted that such attitude discourages people who have better ideas to contribute to the development of the country from contesting.
