2011: Enahoro, Ojukwu, Jakande, others move to present consensus candidate

By Kingsley Omonobi
ABUJA— Apparently convinced that a united opposition was the only way of taking on the ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and giving them a run for their money in the 2011 elections, elder statesman, Chief Anthony Enahoro has initiated a move for the opposition to deliberate and present a consensus candidate in the forthcoming polls.

Towards this end, Chief Enahoro is working on a granite coalition of political parties that would involve General Mohammadu Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change, CPC; Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN; All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP; Social Democratic Mega Party and the Conference of All Nigeria Political Parties.

According to a statement signed by Olubori Obafemi on behalf of the Mega Summit Group, Enahoro is set not only to reconcile and harmonize the progressive parties and platforms in a renewed bid to provide a formidable alternative to the political status quo in the country ahead of the 2011 polls, but also to host a crucial meeting of the original leaders of the Mega Summit in Benin, Edo State capital before the end of this month.

According to the statement,“from the emerging scenario, it is now very clear to the leaders of the movement that it will only take a miracle for progressive as well as opposition forces to win the forthcoming elections if they field more than one presidential candidate.

“Consultations among allies and leading opposition have also shown that there is an urgent need to halt the current drift into political mushrooms in the guise of party formation. So, the consensus is that Chief Anthony Enahoro, who initiated the idea of the mega party in the first place, is still in the best position to intervene.”

“In the light of this new spirit, the national leader is expected to send various delegations round the country to consult with original leaders of the Mega Summit Movement and progressives.

“Those attentively listed to join Enahoro as co-conveners are Alhaji Maitama Sule, Prof. Iya Abubakar, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Chief Solomon Lar, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Olu Falae, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, Senator Ken Nnamani, Alabo Tonye Graham Douglas, and Prof Pat Utomi among others,” it said.
