Strike cripples Delta polys, colleges of education

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI — ACADEMIC activities in the three Delta State Polytechnics of Ozoro, Ogwashi-Uku, Otefe-Oghara and the three Colleges of Education of Agbor, Warri and Mosogar have been grounded following the over two weeks strike action embarked upon by academic staff of the institutions.

The Ozoro Polytechnic chapter of ASUP in a communique after a meeting with the Governing Council of the institution and government, insisted that the state government should sign a memorandum of understanding with the union on the implementation of the new salary increase and other issues before the strike could be called off.

The communique by the chapter’s chairman, Mr. Eboibi Okeoghene and Secretary, Mr. Emakpor Lucky, said “we recognise and commend the effort of the Delta State government in setting up a negotiating/harmonization committee, whose terms of reference , includes to verify the cost implication and recommend as appropriate the implementation of CONCASS

“The state ASUP and COEASU continue to wonder why the sense of urgency demonstrated by Delta State government in the implementation of the new salary increase for DELSU-ASUU, cannot be extended to the Delta State ASUP and COEASU respectively,” the union added.

“We are not unaware of the hope and aspirations of parents and students hence, the union is calling all well meaning Deltans to persuade the Delta State government for a speedy resolution of the dispute and resumption for serious academic business,” the unions added.
