It would be recalled that in the process of kidnapping them one of the sailors was shot dead.

Spokesman of the JTF, Lt. Col. Timothy Atinga, said the sailors regained their freedom today but could not say anything on their state of health.

“The 12 persons held hostage by unknown gunmen have been released. They regained their freedom about two hours ago. I cannot talk about their condition now.

“All I can tell you is that as at the time I got the message, they (foreign sailors) were on their way to Bonny,” he said

Adding, in a separate telephone chat, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dr Mrs Rita Inoma Abbey said she was also aware of the release.

Her words, “I was informed by the Navy spokesperson that those held hostage by some gunmen had been released and taken to Bonny. That is the only information I have for now. ”
