BENIN—Edo State Governor, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, has revoked the contract for the renovation of the General Hospital, Agenebode, in Etsako East Local Government Area, describing the work so far executed by the contractor as shoddy and substandard.
Also at Ivbikuha, the Governor ordered the arrest of the contractor handling an MDG water project, for the construction of an over head tank without sinking a borehole.
He also lashed out at the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Momoh, for covering up the contractor, Messrs Esog Nigeria Limited.
A visibly angry Governor Oshiomhole, who was on tour of project sites to assess the level of work done by the various contractors, said the contractors lacked the competence to handle the work because, after collecting millions of naira as mobilization fee, they went ahead to use substandard materials.
Blaming the Commissioner and site engineers, the Governor said the supervising Ministry did not do proper supervision.
“As I said, the contract remains revoked and all money paid the contractor must be recovered,†he said, adding that this had confirmed his fear of not giving jobs to local contractors.
Oshiomhole said that the site engineer’s job would also go because his administration cannot keep an employee who connived with contractors.
He explained that his order for the arrest of contractor handling the borehole was to prevent the villagers from lynching him, since they knew that there was no borehole sunk.
According to him, “I had to order his arrest so that he can be in protective custody to avoid the people dealing with him, and to allow him do a proper job.â€
The Governor said apart from the hospital and borehole saga, he was satisfied with the level of job done, particularly the road constructions aimed at opening up rural communities and the renovation work going on at St. John’s College, Fugar.
