In a set out campaign and effort to achieve more for Logosians and continue the good work of technological development for safe-haven, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service is set with new campaigns to educate TV viewers on the need to pay tax.
The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Tunde Fowler, said these campaigns like previous ones before them, aim at establishing the essence of tax payment across all strata of our society.
“I am sure you remember our previous Enlightenment Campaigns that featured temporal and spiritual leaders like former Lagos State governor, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Pastor Enoch Adeboye and Sheikh Abdurrahman Ahmed. And also our Nollywood Stars Endorsement Campaign which featured Funke Akindele of the Jennifer fame, Kate Henshaw Nuttal, Segun Arinze and others.
Not unlike the artistes’ slice that indicates star endorsement, the new campaigns encompassing Market Woman, Auto Mechanic, Lawma Officials and I Live in Lagos use the testimonial style to portray how some categories of Lagosians not otherwise regarded as faithful tax payers contribute their own quotas. While the Market Woman category was produced by Core Media Services, I Live in Lagos is a product of Strategic Outcomes (using Flykite Productions) where popular media executive, Jenkins Alumona, holds sway.
“Like the previous campaigns, and in the spirit of creating a new brand identity and business attitude, are aimed at establishing the payment of tax and its administration as serious business. It connects everybody – young and old – with the need for and benefits of tax payment, he said.
He explains, “although I won’t say one campaign has been more successful than the others in terms of how they improved the revenue generated, a lot of people tend to remember the Nollywood stars endorsement advert particularly. It’s a very popular one. But we also realise that the campaign in which we use former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the incumbent Governor Babatunde Fashola also have a way o specially appealing to their followers who see the need to pay their taxes. The same applies to the ones in which the religious leaders are featured.
He reiterated that government will not fail in their social responsibilities if Lagosians will adhere to pay their tax as stipulated in Law.
Fowler concluded that the state’s internally generated revenue as at 1998/99 was N600m and increased to N8 billion in 2007 and is now N14bn on the average. He commended the agency’s partners in the campaign series for having been helpful and understanding its vision.
