UYO—President Goodluck  Johnathan has commissioned the Akwa Ibom International Airport, Phase 1,  the  Airport Road, Banking District Road Network, Fly-Over II and III, the Waste Management Maintenance Equipment and Workshop as well as performed the groundbreaking ceremony of the main terminal of the Airport and the inspection of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, MRO facilities.
The President who was received with pump after the guard of honour mounted by a detachment of the  Nigerian  Army, the Air force and the Nigerian Navy,  commissioned the $370 million airport project.

President Jonathan was received by the Governors of the Niger Delta States, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra, Theordor  Kalu of Abia, Rotimi Ameachi of Rivers, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Timipre Slyva of Bayelsa, Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, Niyel Imoke of Cross River alongside the host Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio.

Johnathan who proceeded to inaugurate the Phase I of the Airport, having about 190 landing lights against the 30 that is in the Abuja International Airport,  after Akpabio briefly gave the history of the airport and assured him of the support of the people of Akwa Ibom. The President also commissioned the Airport Road, a dual carriage way, and later, the Banking District Layout, Udo Udoma Avenue,  in Uyo.

Governor Akpabio later led the President to inspect the E-Library project of his government and commission text books for the state’s Free and Compulsory Education Programme, after which the President, moved to Atiku Abubakar Avenue and commissioned Fly-Over II and III, before going onto commission the Waste Management Maintenance Equipment & Workshop and thereafter inspected the  Drainage Project of the State Government in Ekid Itam .
