Inactivity in Asaba, grave silence in Sapele

Captain Daniel Omayone Mayuku teed off his tenure at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, Asaba with great passion.  Before sweeping the hearts of Asaba golfers and emerging as the ‘capo’, Mayuku single-handedly sponsored tournaments and convinced friends to do same and lured his non golfing friends to Asaba (some took up the game while others are yet to fulfill their promise).

He is  no doubt the moving spirit behind IGCC and he has  spent personal fund to ensure that the club is in proper shape.

He championed the redesigning of the course and today the sprawling 18 holes golf facility is one of the most challenging golf courses in the country.

His reason was that he wanted a course that will compete favourably with some of the best in the country and to a large extend, the chairman Finance and Appropriation Committee in the Delta State House of Assembly has met some of his dreams for the club. Despite this development, the club has seen a sharp decline in the number of quality competitions held this year.

What obtains nowadays are golfers playing kitties and mini tournaments which attracts only a few golfers from neighbouring Benin and Sapele Golf clubs. The passion that drove Mayuku to sponsore tournaments has died down and every one appears to be satisfied with status quo.

The IGCC Captain once talked about sponsoring a major tournament for professional golfers. According to him, the peanuts earned by professional golfers was a source of worry for him and he wanted to do something that would revolutionize pro golf in the country. But as you read this piece, he is yet to decide when the tournament will come up.
As if the situation in Asaba does not give enough worry, that of Sapele Athletic Club (Golf section) is definitely a course for concern.

The last time anything  good was heard about the ‘oldest’ golf club in Nigeria, was last year, when they said they were converting their browns to green. The news came with so much excitement but the euphoria quickly died when work on the course slowed down tremendously. Initially, it was said that the entire 18 holes was going green but after some months, it was discovered only a few holes actually turned green.

According to an insider, obviuosly tired of waiting for the contractor to finish work,  club members have decided to carry on with the conversion of the browns to greens. “It appears the contractor is waiting for money but we have started work on our own. We are tired of waiting forever”, our source said.
