ABUJA — The Action Congress, AC, said yesterday that it has confidence in the person of the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof, Atahiru Jega, but that INEC as an institution, is laden with high ranking officials who have no integrity and do not have the confidence of Nigerians to help Jega hold free and fair elections.
The Chairman of the AC, Chief Bisi Akande, who said this at a briefing yesterday, revealed that following the trend all over the world, the AC would only field youthful candidates of sound intellect, high morality and with proven record of sincere service for elections.
The AC Chairman, who also said the party has been under “severe†pressure by some parties for a merger, announced that the AC would produce its presidential candidate on August 9th.
The AC which condemned the internal wrangling in the PDP over zoning described it as, “mere internal jostling for sharing of the stolen resources of Nigeria.”
On Jega, the AC leader said, “we have very high confidence in the person of Prof. Jega. We see him as a man of sound integrity; as a man who excelled in all his assignments and we believe that he is a good man. That is how we know him, but not INEC,†he said.
According to him, “we don’t know the Federal INEC commissioners that he will be working with. We don’t know the States electoral officials. Most of them are not people of integrity and honour.
