2011: Northern youths threaten anti-Jonathan campaign

*Say anti-zoning treacherous

KADUNA—A group of northern youths has threatened to begin a campaign of disobedience against northern leaders and the governors of the region if they conceded the 2011 presidency to President Goodluck Jonathan.

The group, which met under the aegis of Arewa Defence League, said they would not sit back and watch while the future and interest of the region is mortgaged by the leaders for their selfish interests.

President of the league, Murtala Abubakar who made this known at a news conference, urged both the 19 northern governors and other political leaders kicking against the zoning arrangement in  People’s Democratic Party, PDP, not to forget that the issue was slowly and steadily being understood by majority of northerners as a breach of an agreement that was made in good faith but to bring peace and justice in the country by those that ought to be respectable politicians from the south-south.

Breach of agreement
Abubakar further said the breach of such an agreement cannot be without consequences, pointing out it must be made absolutely clear that the issue that was at stake is that of treachery which will not heal with time.

According to him, the reality on ground shows that in 20 years of the Fourth Republic, the north is being told that it has used up its eight years of two terms of the Musa Yar’Adua and there will be 18 years of which power will remain the exclusive property and birth right of the South before the North will be in power again.

He said: “The 19 northern governors must tow the same line with the Northern Political Leaders Forum and insist that the zoning formula is implemented to its logical conclusion because it is an issue that has long been resolved as attested to by the emergence of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Umar Musa Yar’Adua in 1999 and 2007, respectively.

“This is at the root of political morality and without morality and respect for the sanctity of political arrangement nothing can be guaranteed.

“We want to believe that our governors will not be party to the clear attempt by anti-zoning elements to destabilise the country, heighten tension and insecurity by manipulating religion and ethnicity.”

According to him, people are trying to make an exception to the current zoning arrangement because of the geographical origin of the current occupant of the office who is a product of zoning himself.
