N-Assembly meets Speakers to harmonize constitution

ABUJA—The two chambers of the National Assembly will tomorrow hold an endorsement meeting of amendments to the 1999 Constitution with Speakers of the 36 states of the Federation.

The meeting, the Deputy speaker and chairman of the House ad hoc committee on the review of the 1999 constitution, Rep. Usman Bayero Nafada  confirmed, will be held in Abuja.

The National Assembly leadership, seeks to take a second look at the merits and highlights of the harmonized copy of the amendments for a quick adoption by the 36 State Houses of Assembly.

To become law, two-thirds (about 24 states) of the State Houses of Assembly must approve the harmonized copy of the bill as passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.

Senate President, David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, the two chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committees on the review of the constitution, Ike Ekweremadu and Usman Bayero Nafada respectively are expected to lead the National Assembly delegation to the meeting with the Speakers of 36 State Houses of Assembly are to be in attendance.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Muhammed Bello Adokie is expected to lead the Federal Government delegation to the meeting.
