Monitor impeachment proceedings, Bayelsa AC tells NBA

By Samuel Oyadongha
Yenagoa—The Action Congress, AC,  in Bayelsa State,  yesterday tasked the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, to closely monitor proceedings at the investigative panel of inquiry, set up by the  Chief Judge of the state to ensure fairness.

Acting Chairman of AC, Mr. Ebikibina Miriki in a statement in Yenagoa,  said the composition of the investigative panel of inquiry inaugurated by the Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri, should be of great interest to the NBA.

Miriki who said that the tensed political situation in the state had the potential of discrediting the reputation of the judiciary,  decried the secrecy surrounding the inauguration of the panel, in view of a subsisting matter on the impeachment before the state High Court.

He urged the NBA to focus attention on the members of the panel to ensure that justice was done in the interest of the people of the state.

“The NBA should rise against the process of selection and inauguration of the panel that was shrouded in so much secrecy,” the party added.

The entire country is watching the unfolding drama in Bayelsa state.”

The party said that the past actions of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and its cohorts in Abuja in the perversion of justice in the impeachment of the former Governor is being re_enacted with the custodians of law as a key player.

“We fault the secret and hurried inauguration of 7_man panel by the Chief Judge. The set up and the sitting of the panel in spite of an existing court action is disrespect to the rule of law and a plan to pervert justice, equity and fairness.”

“The party is disappointed that the panel comprises individuals alleged to be friends of people in government. It shows the level of desperation on the part of the government to have its way and act a script at the expense of fairness and justice,” Miriki said.
