Umuahia â€” The Federal Government, in collaboration with Abia State Ministry of Science and Technology, is to distribute more than 5,000 energy-saving bulbs valued at over N5 million.
The bulbs will be given to households in Abia State under the first phase of the pilot programme.
Abia State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Loveday Nwauba, disclosed this to newsmen, yesterday, after a seminar organised on the energy-saving bulbs at the conference hall of the state planning commission, Umuahia.
According to Nwauba, the essence of replacing the electric bulbs with the energy-saving ones is to cut down energy consumption and reduce wastage.
He named five areas to benefit in the first phase to include: Ehimiri Housing Estate, Federal Low Cost Estate, the Commissionersâ€™ Quarters and Government House.
The commissioner explained that the programme, which is in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, is part of the state Governorâ€™s effort to impact positively on the people of the state.
He said the beneficiaries will be required to return bulbs replaced in their homes for the new ones, adding that the new bulbs will reduce PHCN cost.
Nwauba disclosed that the Ministry of Science and Technology was currently empowering youths of the state through a computer training programme.
