Corps member dies after partying

Umuahia—A female Corps Member, Eden Rita Raphael, deployed to Abia State from Akwa Ibom State, died in an auto crash after a night party in Umuahia on Sunday, an official confirmed.
Rita, (AB/O9C/0211), who was one of the corps members to pass out this month, was serving in Umuahia North Local Government Area and was a member of the Sports Community Development Service, CDS.

An eye-witness told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, yesterday, in Umuahia that Rita was one of the female corps members drafted to attend a send-forth party organised by the Protocol Unit of Abia Government House.

The party was in honour of a former head of the unit, who is now a permanent secretary in one of the ministries.
The witness added that after the merriment, the protocol unit directed its driver to take the corps members, who were brought from various parts of the state, home at 1 a.m.

The witness, who said that she escaped the incident by the whiskers, added that the driver, who was drunk, hit an electric pole on Aba Road. The witness added that  the deceased got her spinal cord broken and died subsequently.“Two people died in the incident,” the witness added.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent who contacted the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, State Coordinator, Mr. Ufot Etukudo, was told that he was too busy for comments. However, a senior NYSC officer confirmed that the incident happened on Aba Road, Umuahia, but added that only one person died.
