Constitution review: Speakers to receive harmonised copy

By Inalegwu Shaibu

ABUJA—THE Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has said the harmonised draft copy of amendment made to the 1999 Constitution will be handed over to the 36 Speakers of State Houses of Assembly next week.

Ekweremadu who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on the review of the constitution told newsmen that the electoral act will be ready in July, stressing that the Senate is working round the clock on it.

He said, “we are meeting with the Houses of Assembly on the 15th of this month to formally hand over the harmonized version to them and we appeal to them to deal with it in a matter of a week or two.

“We intend to extend invitation to the governors or at least find an opportunity of meeting with them to also seek their support at this last lap of this exercise. So, we are not expecting any problem.”

Speaking on the electoral act, he said the Senate and the House of Representatives are committed to ensuring that legislative work on the act is completed as soon as possible.

He said, “we’ve done a Public Hearing on that and the House has started deliberating on the draft bill. At the Senate level, we are waiting to get this thing done with. Once we get the Houses to pass the provisions, then we will fast track the process.

“Already, we’ve done the public hearing and we are putting together our reports. As soon as we are back from our vacation, we will be able to get the report ready, so that once the Houses of Assembly complete their own assignment, we will now sit down and fast track the process of the 2010 Electoral Act. So we are looking at the worst case scenario; in the first to second week in July, we should have been through with that.”lElectoral Act ‘ll be ready in July — Senate
