THE Bariga Divisional Headquarters in Shomolu/Bariga Local Government Area of Lagos State is currently in disarray following the escape of an alleged armed robber, Hakeem Aliu, from one of its cells.
Aliu was reportedly arrested by detectives at the Igbo-Igunu roundabout on June 12, 2010 at about 9.30 p.m after allegedly attempting to rob one Wasiu Yaya of his valuables. The suspect, who police sources said, was already being trailed by detectives, had allegedly stabbed the victim several times on the chest after a failed attempt to rob him.
According to sources, the suspect pleaded with some policemen on duty on Sunday night that he be allowed to take his bath under close supervision. His request was expressly obliged after it was discovered that he was related to a Lagos monarch.
However, Vanguard was told that the situation took a twist after the suspect allegedly pushed aside the policemen and took to his heels to the astonishment of the officers. Report said he was promptly given a hot chase but could not be apprehended.
In a related development, detectives from the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, have smashed a syndicate that specialised in the production and sale of fake Philips products, particularly pressing irons. They arrested 10 suspected members of the syndicate and recovered many suspected fake products.
The arrests were made at the popular Alaba International Market along the Lagos/Badagry expressway and Idumota market on Monday.
The raid, led by a special team from the department, was in compliance to a Lagos Federal High Court order, following an application by Philips International’s lawyers on behalf of the Netherlands-based company.
