600 Edo LP members defect to PDP

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—OVER 600 members of the Labour Party, LP, weekend, defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, the ancestral home of the former Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih.

The decampees, led by Mr Isaac Usigbe, cited the alleged failure of Governor Adams Oshiomhole to fulfill his electoral promises to the people of the state as the reason for their defection.

However, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Foreign Matters/Diaspora, Mr Ehiozuwa Agbonayinma,  expressed doubts over the identity of the defectors, saying,  “this could be another ploy by the PDP to pretend as if they are still popular in the state when they are completely finished. I know that no Labour Party member will ever say that the Governor has not performed with what is on ground now in the state.”

The decampees were received by the state chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih and the State Vice-Chairman of PDP (Edo Central), Chief Clifford Eneh.

Others at the well attended event include, the Senator representing Edo Central, Senator Odion Ugbesia, a member of the House of Representatives, Mr Friday Itulah, Chief Vincent Ogun, former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr David Iyioha and others.

Addressing party members, Chief Orbih said he was not disappointed with the number of decampees the party has been receiving both from the LP and  Action Congress, AC, due to what he described as the disappointing “failure of the administration of Governor Oshiomhole.”

According to him, “when Adams Oshiomhole came to power, I did say that there was nothing to expect from this government. So I am not surprised that some of his supporters,  who expected so much from him are beginning to retrace their steps back to PDP.

When Oshiomhole came to government, he promised free qualitative education, free medical services in state government hospitals, he promised workers of the state heaven and earth.

“But what do we have today? He has failed in all his promises. Thousands and millions of our people are suffering. PDP still remains the party that gives hope to the true democracy that we are all trying to entrench.

That he has failed woefully is what has surprised everybody in Edo State. There was a write up about the general hospital at Aganebode and it is a typical example of what is happening in all the hospitals in Edo State.

In this particular hospital, the writer told us that operations are carried out with torch light. That will tell you the physical example of the failure in our health system,” he said.
