Trader remanded for allegedly killing partner over N1,400 debt

An Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court in Lagos, yesterday, remanded a trader, Mohammed Idris, in prison custody for allegedly stabbing his  business partner to death over a N1,400 debt.

Magistrate M.O. Olubi ordered that Idris, 22, facing a one-count-charge of murder, be detained in custody pending the advice of the State Director of Public Prosecution.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Sam Omoyeni, told the court that the offence was committed on 11 April at a patent medicine store at Marine Beach, Ijora- Badiya, in Lagos.

Omoyeni explained that Idris, who had lent the deceased, Danjuma Mayaya, N1,400 went to his store to demand he pays up.

The prosecutor said a fight ensued following Mayaya’s refusal to pay up and the accused stabbed the deceased with a pair of scissors.

Omoyeni said Mayaya died while being taken to hospital as a result of the injury inflicted with the pair of scissors.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the plea of the accused was not taken by the court.

The Magistrate consequently adjourned the case till 11 June for mention.
