Rights group lauds PSC for restoring Ribadu’s rank

By Emeka Mamah

KADUNA — The Human Rights Monitor, HRM, has commended the Police Service Commission, PSC, for restoring the rank of the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu, as an Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG.

The HRM, however, urged the commission to review the cases of other police officers who were demoted along with Ribadu including the late Haz Iwendi, who served as the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police. Iwendi was demoted post-humously over alleged irregular promotion, just like Ribadu.

Executive Director of the HRM, Mr. Festus Okoye, made this known in an interview in Kaduna, yesterday.

Okoye said it would “amount to selective justice to redress one injustice and allow the injury or injustice to continue in the case of others,” adding: “While commending them for Ribadu’s case, others also demand justice and equity.”

According to Okoye, who was a member of the Justice Mohammed Uwais Committee on Electoral Reform, “other persons in similar circumstances, unjustly demoted or retired, should be restored to their former ranks and positions.”

Meanwhile, over 100 petitions were said to have been received by the PSC from officers who suffered similar fate with the former EFCC boss, asking for the review of their cases.
