BENIN—The Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has condemned the killing of journalists in the country, saying it was unacceptable as only a truthful and courageous media could move the nation forward.
Speaking yesterday when members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, organized a rally to Government House, as part of activities to mark this year’s Press Week in Benin City, Oshiomhole, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. According to him, Edo State government is in partnership with Nigerian journalists for good governance, and”we are calling on the National Assembly to pass the Freedom of Information Bill into law in the country.
“It is curious why the National Assembly cannot pass the FOI Bill before them because freedom of information is the inalienable right of everybody.”
The governor observed that “unless we deepen democracy and organise free and fair elections in the country, we cannot have good governance.â€
He said the administration had made it a watchword that whatever was done by the state government was made known to the public, adding that no attempt was made to cover anything. He said Oshiomhole was championing electoral reform with the ‘one man, one vote’ campaign.
Commending the NUJ for the activities during the Press Week, which included lectures and symposiums, the governor noted that this was how citizens of civilized nations got involved in social engineering and urged the members to be very vigillant and not to allow any distraction to rubbish the development strides of the government.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, Comrade Friday Obanor said the theme of the rally “Walk of life, walk for good governance†was part of activities to mark the NUJ Press Week which commenced with a lecture on Monday.
He said the union was sensitizing the public against the rampant killing of Journalists in the country, stressing that enough is enough, calling for the passage of the freedom of information bill.
“We key into the one man one vote campaign because that is the democracy we are talking about and we want to appeal to everybody to support the campaign for good governanceâ€, he added.
