Lawmaker in police net over pump action gun

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN—A  Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, member in Edo State House of Assembly (names withheld), was yesterday arrested with a pump action gun by the police in Benin City.

It was learnt that he was arrested along the Benin-Auchi road after policemen on duty searched his vehicle and found the gun.

However, the PDP in the state said the gun was licensed, and was, therefore, legal.

But the PDP in the state, through its Director of Publicity, Mr Okhikharia Ihimekpen, described the arrest as politically motivated and accused the state government of doing all it could to rubbish the party in the state.

However, when newsmen visited the Police headquarters in the state at about 2:30pm, the lawmaker was sighted making statement but the policemen at the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, drove newsmen away when an attempt was made to speak to him.

The lawmaker is representing one of the constituencies in Edo Central senatorial district of Edo State.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Peter Ogboi, who simply told Vanguard that “ he is in our custody,” said the matter was being investigated but could not confirm whether the lawmaker was arrested with a gun or not.

Mr Ihimekpen asserted that the lawmaker “has a gun license, the entire arrest was politically motivated. He is an honourable member and an experienced one for that matter, so he knows what is wrong and what is right.

“It’s part of the political gimmick by government to paint the PDP in bad light. There is more to it than meets the eye.

They are the people that carry illegal guns. We want the police to carry out the investigations to the letter.”
