KADEI faults calls for new state

By Emeka Mamah

KADUNA—The Kaduna Development Elders Initiative, KADEI, has faulted the current agitation for the creation of a new state by people from the southern part of the state.

KADEI, which is led by the former Minister of Agriculture in the administration of ex-President Shehu Shagari, Dr. Umaru Dikko, also stated that the terminology, “Southern Kaduna” was coined by some elements of the southern Zaria in their efforts to diminish the influence of the Zazzau Emirate which had been administering the area even before 1914.

This is coming against the backdrop of recent protests over the swearing in of Mr. Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa as the first Christian to govern the state since its creation about 34 years ago.

In a 63-page booklet entitled “Kaduna Caucus; For the Record: Agitation for Creating New state in Kaduna (the History, the issues, the facts and the Figures)”  the group further stated that it was forced to debunk certain claims by those agitating for a Southern Kaduna state to discourage “jokers, who are professional trouble makers” from blocking and wasting “our time”.

The booklets were dumped at the General Usman Katsina House (State House) last Wednesday, during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor, Alhaji Muktar Yero, by the Chief Judge, Justice Rahila Cudjoe, ostensibly for the crowd to collect copies .

“Fresh cries of domination are today coming from the southern part of the state and there is agitation for a break up.”
