…Receives VP of the Gambia
By Daniel Idonor
President Goodluck Jonathan in his usual humility Monday walked a distance from his former office, where he acted as the country’s president for about three months, to his new office located in the President Wing of the Presidential Villa to officially resume duties as Nigeria’s substantive President.
He has been operating from the Akinola Aguda House, the official residence of the Vice President since Thursday when he was sworn-in as the 4th Executive President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria following the death of former President Umaru Yar’Adua last Wednesday night.
While as the Acting President, Jonathan had operated from the Vice President’s office at the Vice President wing of the Villa.
However this changed MOnday as Jonathan who first reported in his former office at the Vice President wing of the Aso Villa at about 11.20 a.m, held a brief meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Alhaji Yayale Ahmed.
Clad in the popular Niger-Delta attire (black colours) President Jonathan, joined by Yayale, his Principal Secretary, Mike Oghiadome, his Spokesman, Mr Ima Noboro, other aides, and the Chaplain of the Aso Villa Chapel, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba moved down to the Presidential wing.
The new President arrived at his new office at exactly 11:45 am in the company of other top government functionaries, to perform his first official function in office where he received the Vice President of the Gambia, Aja Aisatou Njie Saidey, later in the day.
After a brief meeting in the new office, which was attended by the National Security Adviser (NSA), General Mohammed Gusau (rtd) and the SGF, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, the NSA and the SGF were later sighted at exactly 12:45pm leaving for their respective offices.
Though reporters were not allowed entry into the Presidential wing, prayers were to have been offered by Rev. Onwurumba before Jonathan officially occupied the Presidential seat at about 12.20 p.m. After about an hour at the new office, the President left the office for Aguda House.
Meanwhile, the president still maintains his retinue of aides that have been with him since his days as the Vice President. His lanky police Aide-De-Camp (ADC) who had been with him since his days as governor of Bayelsa state, the Security Officer, the protocols and his security detail.
The president later resurfaced at the new office at about 2.30pm to receive the Vice President of the Gambia, Aja Aisatou Njie Saidey who paid him a condolence visit.
Vanguard however gathered that except for the visit of the Gambia Vice President Jonathan would not have resumed his new office MOnday as he had to return to his official residence, at Aguda House, shortly after the exit of his visitor; where he carried presidential duties for the rest of the day.
While at Aguda House, President Jonathan received the national leadership of the opposition party, the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP).
As at press time, officials of construction giant, Julius Berger, were seen putting finishing touches to what officials said is major repair works at both the new office and residence; preparatory to the relocation of President Jonathan.
