Intercontinental Bank Plc at the weekend commissioned an ultra_modern 120_bed hostel it built and donated to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai commended the bank for the gesture, saying the government and the university council were quite appreciative of the donation.
Also speaking, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive of Intercontinental Bank, Mr. Mahmoud Lai Alabi who noted that the completion of the project was indeed a dream come true, thanked the state government for the opportunity given the bank to immortalise its name in the university with the donation of the hostel.
Represented at the occasion by the Regional Director, South South Region, Mr Ben Udowa, Alabi said the bank was aware of the pivotal role education plays in nation building hence its involvement in the sector.
He added that the bank’s involvement in educational infrastructure development was in recognition of the fact that government could not provide everything needed by the citizenry hence the need for the private sector to rise to the challenges of national development.
According to him, the bank has demonstrated its belief in educational infrastructure development through its “well_known State Scholarship Awards already launched in many states of the federation, and the donation of student hostels to higher institutions of learning, one of which we are here today to commissionâ€.
