Group wants Ibo as INEC chair

By Victor Ahiuma-Young

A pan-Igbo socio-cultural group under the aegis of Concerned Igbo Citizens for State Democracy in Nigeria, CICSDN,  has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to appoint an Igbo man to replace former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Maurice Iwu, who is now on pre-retirement leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure.

The group, in a statement at the end of its National Executive Council, NEC,  meeting in Lagos, described Prof Iwu’s removal as a welcome development and maintained, however, that an Igbo person should be appointed to take charge of INEC, “considering the fact the Igbo are presently out of leadership positions in any of the three arms of government.”

CICSDN, also urged the President  to henceforth, involve the socio-cultural organisation of the geo-political zones, such as Afenifere, Arewa Consultative Forum and Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo and South-South Consultative Assembly,  in making sensitive appointments to checkmate the excesses of the recommended appointees.
