Group foils robbery in Anambra

Ihiala (Anambra) —A vigilance group in Ihiala, Anambra State, Tuesday, foiled an attempt by a gang of armed bandits to rob some banks in the commercial hub of the community.

The vigilance group, popularly called Ihiala Vigilante Services, reacted swiftly to alerts by some individuals on the gang’s movements in the commercial area.

Mr. Ben Ezeukwu, one of the leaders of the vigilance group, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation with newsmen in Onitsha.

Ezeukwu said:  “After a heavy gun battle, the vigilantes were able to apprehend four of the robbers, while the others escaped.

“Three AK47 rifles and a large cache of ammunition were also seized from the robbers.”

Ezeukwu, however, refused to give additional information on the incident.

“I am not in the mood to give the details, as the vigilantes and the Police have taken the robbers to the police station,” he said.

Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, also confirmed the incident.

However, the Police spokesman said “the details are not available yet since we are still involved in the operation.”
Chuwkwuemeka said the Police would soon address the press on the breakthrough in Ihiala and other successful operations.
