Group faults alleged application of 199 constitution

By Charles Kumolu

INTERNATIONAL Coalition for Best Practices in Public Service, ICOBEPPS, has condemned what it described as deceitful and misleading application of the 1999 constitution by politicians desperate to achieve selfish ends, saying that there is no place in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where it is written that one must be up to 50 years of age to be Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

It also noted that since a substantive chairman has not been appointed, there is still time for the presidency to do the right thing by directing that the most senior National Electoral Commissioner oversee the affairs of INEC.

A statement by ICOBEPPS, Pastor Enoch Endurance Pam, said it was unpatriotic and self-serving for an individual or a group of people to sit down and hatch falsehood with which the president of the country was deceived into reversing a directive he issued in line with the powers bestowed on him by the laws of the land.
