ABUJA Federal Government    said it will not hesitate to deal with fake tourism promoters in the country.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed stated this recently, when he paid an official visit to Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), in Abuja.
According to him, it is imperative for the development of the industry to sieve fake tourism promoters since tourism is a diplomatic instrument for any nation.
He noted, there is lot of opportunities in the tourism sector in the country, which has open room for lot of opportunists adding that a lot need to be done when we look at some other countries in the world.
“We should be able to promote tourism in Nigeria and NTDC is wearing that identity. There are opportunities that exist in this industry and lot of people will be scavenging. So we have to open our eyes to see those who are genuine and those who are fake, it is very important for the development of tourism.
A tourism industry in a nation is like a diplomatic instrument, the moment you take the wrong step, then you have finished your country. So we must be able to sieve out the genuine ones and those that are there for their selfish reasons. The tourism industry has to be developed in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders.â€
â€We should be cautious and we should be able to separate those who are genuine and those who are fake, in fact we have been trying to create an enabling environment for promoters, we must do that to be able to move forward.†He said
Alhaji Mohammed tasked the agency to ensure the development of tourism which will ensure the social economic development of Nigeria. He said if the sector is promoted there is enormous advantage to this.
He stressed, “This agency is both the regulator and promoter and they have been able to live up to expectation and they are wearing their true identity.
The various concept and products are really commendable and as you said and as it is known to all of us tourism will give us a sustainable economic growth, tourism is not like oil, it is spread all over the nation and so the multiplying effects of tourism can go all over the nooks and craning of this country.
I challenge you to develop ideas that will promote social economic development of this country. And for that you have to raise up to the challenge.
I want to know that there more challenges and I do not want you to rest on your oars because there are lots of people that want to take advantage of the sector and a lot of support will be required from stakeholders and policy makers and so it is your responsibility to challenges. Promoting the industry is very crucial. If this industry is developed the advantage is enormous and you will know that history will put you in the proper place for changing the lives of Nigerians.
He assured the agency that the ministry will give them all the necessary support especially in the areas of policy by way of providing logistics in order to move the sector forward.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director General, NTDC, Otunba Segun Runsewe said promotion and development of tourism in the country is like defending the future of children yet unborn. Tourism he said is forever, so there is need for Nigeria to sustain the development of tourism in the nation.
