With the exception of four new players, Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Lars Lagerback, yesterday, released his 30-man provisional list without training. He had invited 44 players before trimming it down to 30. The high point of the list is the inclusion of two home-based players and the Utaka brothers – John and Peter and Uche brothers – Ike and Kalu.
The new players include Akpan Bassey and Suswan Peter from Bayelsa Utd FC and Lobi Stars FC respectively while Ideye Brown and Utaka Peter are from FC Sochaux in France and Odense Boldklub, Denmark.
Though he confessed that he was yet to meet with the players one-on-one, Lagerback said he came about the list after due consultation with his indigenous assistants. The Swede ruled out influence from the Nigeria Football Association in the compilation of the list.
“It’s been a lot of travelling and planning as well as the rebuilding of the training centre in South Africa all these while. We’ve watched these players on video and some of them live before we came to the conclusion on who to add on the 30-man list.
“We’ve also carefully studied their pattern of play, and there are some that can switch easily. Some of these players are fast and some are slow, and their pattern is a good combination to raise a solid team for the World Cup. Fitness of the players was another factor we looked into before drawing the listâ€, Lars Lagerback said as he included Daniel Shittu, who did not feature for his team (Bolton Wanderers) once in the English Premiership that ended with Chelsea as the winners.
