WARRI—ARMED men suspected to be robbers, weekend, ambushed a bullion van along Benin-Oghara express road, close to the Jameison river, near Oghara, in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, killing three mobile police escorts.

Three other mobile police escorts were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Warri

The bullion van with its police escort jeep, according to sources, was returning to Warri from Benin empty when it ran into the gunmen who opened fire on them.

It was further gathered that the incident took place at about 5 p.m. last Friday  after the staff of a Warri- based bank (names withheld) were heading back to base after transacting official business at the Central Bank of Nigeria Zonal Office in Benin.

“We were returning from CBN Benin when we suddenly ran into the ambush by gunmen. Immediately they opened fire and shot indiscriminately, particularly towards the jeep carrying our police escort.

“In the process, three mobile policemen were shot. Two died on the spot while the third one was finally killed when the gunmen could not get any reasonable money from the bullion van. Three others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment now,” one of the victims disclosed.
