2011: Babangida faults campaign on religious ground

Media spokesman to General Ibrahim Babangida, Prince Kassum Afegbua has described as unhealthy, the current campaign in the Christian circle against the presidential ambition of General Babangida on account of his religion.

In a statement titled, “PFN, Bishops got it wrong on IBB”, Prince Afegbua argued that it will be counter-productive to drive the politics of this country on the planes of religion

According to the statement, “General Ibrahim Babangida, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a devout Muslim, has numerous Christian friends across the country with whom he enjoys cordial relationships and fraternity.

“As President, he was able to open up bilateral relations with Israel to enable our Christian brothers and sisters undergo Holy Pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Any Nigerian, who tries to play out religious sentiments and get too deeply involved in the politics of the nation, will be missing the point.

“General Ibrahim Babangida is proud to be a devout Muslim and that has nothing to do with his constitutional right to vote and be voted for.

His Muslim brothers and sisters alone cannot make him a president neither will Christians alone make a Christian candidate a president.

Every presidential aspirant or candidate (IBB inclusive) needs the votes of all without descending to base instincts of anyone’s religiousity.
