Rights group tasks Jonathan on failed federal roads in Anambra

By Vincent Ujumadu

AWKA—THE International Society for Civil Liberties and the Rule of Law, INTERSOCIETY, has called on Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to direct the immediate rehabilitation of the Onitsha end of the Ontisha–Enugu highway to reduce the number of road accidents on the road.

Chairman of group, Mr. Emeka Umeagbalasi, in a letter to Dr Jonathan, appealed to the Federal Government to direct the company presently handling the rehabilitation of the road to pay more attention to the Head Bridge–Nkpor axis to reduce the carnage on the road.

The worst portions of the road are the Chisco Park, where gullies have washed-off the culverts and cut-off one side of the dual carriageway, the Niger Bridge Roundabout, the Upper Iweka flyover, the Army Barracks area, among others.

The group said that passing through Onitsha has become a nightmare to people, adding that accidents, with human and material casualties, have become a common thing in the town, as a result of the terrible state of the road.

It advised that the company handling the road should be properly mobilized so that it would not have any reason to abandon the job.

Meanwhile, the group has commended the Federal Government for deciding to begin the construction of the second Niger Bridge, which it observed, would ease traffic in the commercial city.  Umeagbalasi hoped that the project would be awarded to a reputable company to ensure that that the project is carried out according to specification.
