PHCN under-utilises Rivers IPP output, says Gov Amaechi

By Jimitota Onoyume
PORT-HARCOURT —  POWER Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, has been blamed for the power challenge in Rivers State.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who spoke while on project inspection in the state, said PHCN has not been able to evacuate available megawatts (MW) of electricity generated from the state Independent Power Project, IPP.

He said the state government had commenced test run of its brand new 100 megawatts Gas Turbine Power Plant at the state’s IPP site at Trans-Amadi.

He, however, regretted that out of the 100MW of electricity generated at the new station, PHCN was only able to evacuate 18MW, leaving 82MW idle.

“It is sad that at a time when most homes have no power supply, power being generated is wasted,” Amaechi lamented.
He noted that at present, 82MW of electricity was being wasted from the new station, while only 48MW  out of 105MW was evacuated from Omoku Station by PHCN.

He urged the state Ministry of Power to resolve all local transmission problems facing electricity consumers.
in the state, including the absence of transformers in most parts of Port Harcourt.

He called on the people of the state to be patient with government, as a lasting solution was being sought for the problem.
