The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, yesterday, made a passionate appeal to the Ag. President Goodluck Jonathan led administration, to adopt a zero tolerance approach against torture and extra judicial killings in the country.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Roland Ewubare, made this call in Abuja yesterday, during a public lecture on torture and extra judicial killings in Nigeria, organized by National Youth Corps members serving in the commission.
He insisted that unless the federal government takes proactive measures towards fine-tuning strategies to combat and hold perpetrators accountable, that the issue of safeguarding human rights in Nigeria will remain a mirage.
While calling for the domestication of the anti_torture bill, which he said was already before the National Assembly, Ewubare, insisted that the only way to reduce the mounting cases of extra_judicial killings in the country is by building a sustainable national opinion against it as well as re_orientating law enforcement agencies, who he said are the primary culprits.
