Kebbi butchers demand coldrooms

Birnin Kebbi —  The Kebbi State Butchers Association, yesterday, in Birnin Kebbi demanded the provision of coldrooms to ensure healthy preservation.

Chairman of the association, Mr Hassan Dangwa, told newsmen  that the lack of cold rooms had forced butchers to find alternatives which they did not consider very healthy.

“Lack of coldrooms has left us with no alternatives than to imrpovise and we feel that is unhealthy,” Dangwa said.
According to him, an average of 20 cows are slaughtered daily in  Birnin Kebbi, adding that the lack of modern beef conveyance vans had  exposed the commodity to possible contamination.

The chairman said conveying beef on motorcycles covered with cellopane was unhygienic and unhealthy.
He said the association would monitor the activities of members to ensure that beef provided for public consumption was healthy, adding: “We will ensure that our members do not engage in unlawful slaughtering and sale of beef. ”
Lerama said the suspects would be charged to court once investigations were concluded.
