Nigerian athletes who reached    the final of the Berlin 2009 World Championships have a cause to smile as the world athletics ruling body, IAAF has paid their winnings to the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.
Nigeria’s men and women 4x400m relay teams were the only finalists at the Berlin World Championship. And they received 20,000 dollars for their efforts.
The men’s team featuring Saul Weigopua, Noah Akwa, Ameachi Morton and Bola Lawal placed 8th in the men’s final and they earned a meager 4000 dollars, while the women team that had Endurance Abinuwa, Ajoke Odumosu, Josephine Ehigie, and Folashade Abughan placed fourth in the women final and earned 16,000 dollars.
“All the athletes involved have collected their monies. Those who have not received theirs probably have not gotten in touch with the secretary,†said AFN technical director Sunday Bada .
The top prize for each of the individual events was 60,000 dollars for gold, 40,000 for silver, while 20, 000 went for the bronze medalists. The relays fetched 80,000, 60,000 and 20, 000 for the first three finishers. Nigerian athletes did not make it to the final in the individual events as Berlin 2009 was a tempestuous Championships for them.
But not so for an athlete like Usain Bolt who raked in a total prize money of 320, 000 dollars from Berlin. He won in three events,100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Bolt broke two world records which were worth 100, 000 dollars each.
