Army disowns fake charity agency

Enugu—The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu says its attention has been drawn to the existence of a fraudulent organisation, which has been defrauding the public.

A statement in Enugu yesterday by Lt.-Col. Sagir Musa, Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, said under the illegal body, “Nigerian Army Control Charity Programme,” members of the dubious association were soliciting for funds.

It said that the dubious body has been duping some undiscerning members of the public of funds, which they claimed would be used to organise a workshop on charity support at various military operations, adding that the organisation also claimed that such funds would be used on officers and men preparing for peace-keeping operations as well as those returning from operations.

“In view of this, the Division wishes to inform the general public that such  dubious, faceless and fraudulent organisation does not exist in the Nigerian Army and the entire military,’’ the statement re-assured the public.

It urged the public to be wary of such people and report to the nearest police station or army formation for arrest, investigation and prosecution, adding that some members of the public had already donated various sums in cash to the fraudsters.

“Out of the 31 persons listed as having made donations, paid in between N2,000 and N5,000 each,” the Army said.
