Abia PDP lawmakers task INEC on voters’ register

By Ben Agande

ABUJA—Members of the National Assembly from Abia State under the aegis of  the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, caucus have petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  over what they described as ‘obvious anomaly in the voters’ register’. They have also called for the immediate correction of the anomaly in order not to disenfranchise  millions of registered voters in the state.

In a petition  by the eight-member strong caucus to the chairman of INEC, Prof. Maurice Iwu, they warned that unless something was done by the Commission, the anomaly was capable of evolving into a major crisis.

The petition, which was signed by Senators, Nkechi Nwaogu, Enyinnaya Abaribe and Mr. Eziuche Ubani, Kalu Uduma, Chinenye Ike, Nkiru Onyejiocha, Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje and Uzoma Abonta called on the Commission to “conduct a fresh and full review of the voters’ register, whereby every eligible voter in Abia State would be registered afresh. The ongoing continuous registration of voters and adjustments cannot address this anomaly since no data base exists in the aforementioned local governments.”
