Last week I taught on the curse of the law, the curse of spiritual parents and the curse of prophets. This week, I will show you another root cause of curses—the curse of idolatry and marital family curse.

The curse of idolatry (Idol Worship): This is where the generational curses began. Idolatry inflicts humanity with generational curses; it goes through the third and the fourth generations. God’s Word says: “…Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.” (Exodus 20:2-5).

Idolatry inflicts humanity with generational curses; it goes through the third and the fourth generation. I strongly believe that Africa is largely wriggling under these generational curses, but today, there is deliverance. Somebody testified here sometime ago that no lady gets married in their family. One day, one of them approached their father to know what happened. Their father replied that they consulted a native doctor long ago, when they were in need of female children, and that was the result of it.

God said He’s going to visit the iniquity of any man or woman on their third and fourth generation. From Genesis 15:13-16, we understand that a generation equals 100 years, so four generations equals 400 years. So, the negative effect of idolatry travels through a family lineage for up to 400 years. People are under certain influence that they didn’t know where it came from; but today, whatever that challenge is, I see the power of God setting you free from it.

God won’t share your life with anyone else. (Isaiah 42:8). The good news is: The power of God is here to set you free! You can’t serve two masters at the same time (Matthew 6:24). Choose who you will serve! When you carry charms around you, you become caged by the devil. Your restoration demands that you return to God, before you can be restored. When you return to God, He will build you up. (Job 22:23).

Some have graven images, while others have human images. There are human idols called ‘god-fathers.’ God’s Word says: “Thus saith the Lord; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the Lord (Jeremiah 17:5). Man is not reliable, but the Almighty God is ever reliable! The curse of idolatry has its solution in you. The choice is yours! It’s your obedience of faith that releases the value of your salvation. (John 2:5). Doing what God tells you, establishes your liberty from the curse of idolatry. It’s not enough to be saved; you must follow God so He can lead you. Your liberty will be limited without your being committed. (Luke 6:46).

Following God brings you up; it does not bring you down. Your liberty requires following God tirelessly. It is following God that gives value to your salvation. Following God is the secret of your making.

Marital Family Curses: Walking in the light keeps you free from this curse. Faith in God makes you free. It takes salvation to set you free from this curse; it takes walking in the light to stay free. Note that every prophetic institution is for the rise and fall of many (Luke 4:34). For instance, when David was celebrating God, he was despised by his wife, Michal. The consequence for her was that she suffered incurable barrenness all the days of her life. (II Samuel 6:20-23). This curse of barrenness was self-inflicted! No wonder, God’s Word warns: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil…walketh about, seeking whom he may devour…” (I Peter 5:8-9).

Be vigilant! Don’t give room to the devil, to avoid coming under this marital family curse! Also, never allow the devil to move you to despise God or people.

Friend, access to deliverance from marital curses is the privilege of those who are saved. Are you saved? You get saved as you confess your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. You can be saved now, if you haven’t been, as you say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I come to You today. Forgive me my sins. Cleanse me from sin. From today, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You for saving me. Now I know I am born again!”
