Police link attack on EFCC operatives to robbers

By Chidi Nkwopara

OWERRI—Imo State Police Command has said that the unfortunate attack on the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, at Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state was not premeditated.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Aloysius Okorie, who stated this in a telephone interview, insisted that the incident was a clear case of armed robbery.

“There is nothing to show that the attack was premeditated. The EFCC officials ran into a gang of armed robbers who were operating on that road, on their way back to Enugu,” he said.

Maintaining that he and his team stormed the scene of the incident a few minutes after the hoodlums struck, Mr. Okorie  said that the robbers fled as soon as they sighted his convoy.

The Imo police boss said that the EFCC operatives came into Owerri and did not deem it fit to announce their presence in the state, adding that he was not in a position to explain why they chose that option.

“They may have their reasons for not reporting their presence in the state. Apart from this, they should have requested the Command for beef up of their security, when, according to them, they noticed suspicious movements in the courtroom. Again, they did not choose this option.”

Although Mr. Okorie agreed that “EFCC operatives do very sensitive jobs,” he, however, said that “it behoves on them to report to the police for extra security.”
