Opposition alleges planned clampdown by Ebonyi govt

By Dennis Agbo

ABAKALIKI—THE opposition group in Ebonyi State  led by the state Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, factional chairman, Mr. Adol Awam has alleged threat by the Governor Martin Elechi led government to use subterranean tactics to deal with them in the state.

In a statement by Mr. Nwanne Ominyi, the Personal Assistant to Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu, the group said their attention had been drawn to underground plots by the Ebonyi State Government and the chairman of the government recognised state executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party,  Mr Dave Umahi, to clamp down on opposition as the council elections draw near.

Mr. Umahi, however, told our reporter that the allegation by the opposition group was unfounded and inconsequential. But the opposition group said, “we have it on good authority that Chief Umahi and Governor Elechi, plan to label identified leaders of opposition, especially Chief  Awam and Mr Ominyi, as the perpetrators of the festering Ezza-Ezillo crisis in a vain effort to get us out of the way and perpetrate the lack of internal democracy in the selection of candidates.

“As we make this save our souls appeal to the Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, we want well meaning Nigerians to hear our cry against the high handedness and autocratic rule by Governor Elechi and his hand-picked PDP chairman, Dave Umahi, to not only incriminate us but also demonise us as the architects of the violence that has been troubling the two brotherly communities ever since this administration came on board.

The group recounted that recently, while addressing a rented crowd of apologists, Governor Elechi threatened to use stretchers to dump opposition elements and members of the parallel state executive committee of the PDP into Ebonyi River.
