By Austin Ogwuda
Asaba—A clerical officer attached to Anyameru local government council in Anambra State was a member of the gang involved in the foiled kidnap bid in Asaba on Wednesday morning.

Fresh facts have shown that the gang had successfully kidnapped a civil servant serving in one of the ministries in Asaba, while he was about to leave for work.

Incidentally, information got to his brother working at Government House, Asaba, who in turn phoned the police.
A police officer was also injured during the cross fire.

Parading the suspects at the state police headquarters in Asaba yesterday, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, said one AK 50 rifle with 19 rounds of live ammunition was recovered from the kidnappers.

According to the police commissioner, “a notorious four-man kidnap gang kidnapped one Christopher Eke at Infant Jesus, Anwai road, in an L300 bus.

“Operations department patrol team received information on the kidnap and pursued the hoodlums to DBS road Asaba and when the kidnappers discovered that they were being pursued, they fired the victim on his left thigh to demobilize him and pushed him out of the moving bus and opened  fire on the police team which hit the driver of the patrol team on his left leg”.

He added that the police team fired back and gunned down Chinedu Nchekwu, 29 years, of Gwaripa estate Abuja and arrested Peter (surname withheld), 31 years, a clerical officer attached to Anyameru local government council of Anambra State and the driver of the bus, while the fourth suspect escaped with bullet wounds.

The police boss also said that the suspected highway robbers arrested recently along Patani/Ughelli road with dynamites and assault rifles have been charged to court and already remanded in Okere prisons.
