ABAKALIKI—Over   415 Vesico Vaginal Fistula, VVF, patients have so far received free treatment through the pet project of the wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi in Ebonyi Fistula centre since its inception in 2008.

Another 40 patients are still undergoing treatment at the South East Fistula Centre located inside Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.

Speaking while discharging a batch of 23 VVF patients at the centre, the initiator of Mother and Child Care Initiative, MCCI, Mrs. Elechi thanked God that no life had been lost since the inception of the programme.

According to her, those that have been treated and repaired are women from Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Lagos and Kogi States.

Mrs. Elechi charged the repaired patients to be agents of change when they get home to ensure that no woman was left to labour for more than ten hours without being transferred to a higher level medical centre, adding that they should take the doctors’ instructions seriously. She commended the staff of the VVF centre and all who had contributed in touching the lives of the women and charged them not to relent.

Coordinator of the programme, Dr. Sunday Adeoye told the repaired patients that their problem was not caused by diabolical powers but due to prolonged obstructed labour and could have been taken care of by caesarian operation.
