Ex-militants’ leader tasks FG on post-amnesty

By Jimitota Onoyume

PORT HACOURT—FORMER Commander of Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, Sobomabo Jackreec, alias Egberipapa, has called on the federal government to fast-track its post-amnesty programme for repentant militants in the Niger Delta.

Speaking exclusively to Vanguard yesterday in Port Harcourt, Jackreec said Timi Alaibe should also be made Minister of Niger Delta and to also made to oversee execution of the government’s post-amnesty programme.

According to him, the process to the amnesty exercise is largely successful because of input from Alaibe who has, over time, shown good knowledge of the region and its problems.

He said this accounted for why he was made Presidential Adviser on Niger Delta,  maintaining that as Minister of Niger Delta, Alaibe would be able to pursue very vigorously programmes and projects very dear to the region.

Jackreec also said that Alaibe would enjoy tremendous support from repentant militants because of the major role he played in their demobilization.

The former MEND commander said there were already apprehensions all over that amnesty had failed, stressing that there was urgent need for government to take steps to awaken confidence in the programme.
