Elechi’s wife roots for women, children’s welfare

ABAKALIKI—WIFE of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Josephine Elechi has through her Mother and Child Care Initiative, MCCI, pet project, presented a bill to the state House of Assembly, that seeks to galvanize Private and Public Partnerships, PPP, for the benefit of the health and living conditions of women and children in the state.

Presenting the Mother and Child Care Initiative and other Related Matters Amendment Law No.005, 2009, in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development, USAID,  in Abakaliki, weekend, Mrs. Elechi said that her organisation had developed programmes aimed at assisting the state in addressing the challenges of obstetric fistula, maternal mortality, early detection of breast and cervical cancer, orphans and vulnerable children, HIV\AIDS and girl-child education.

According to her, “in our collective effort at reducing the challenges of obstetric fistula, we had in the past one year, succeeded in restoring smiles to the faces of 375 obstetric fistula clients through our free fistula treatment programme and this figure excludes the 40 new patients currently been treated at the centre. They include women from Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Lagos and Kogi States.”

Mrs. Elechi said that delay in accessing adequate obstetric care as a critical factor in maternal death and obstetric fistula, informed her initiating the bill in the state House of Assembly, which had been passed into law, while several public enlightenment programmes had been initiated to sensitise the people about the law.
