Community hands firms conditions for peace

MULTINATIONAL oil and gas companies operating in Egi community, Rivers state have been told to live up to their corporate social responsibility to the area or be ready for a showdown with the community.

A statement from the Egi Youth Federation and signed by the duo of the president,  Kenneth Isaac and the Public Relations Officer,  Nwabueze Chukwukere said most of the companies in the area had failed to make any contribution to the area.

“In spite of the high volume of gas produced in Egi clan for … (name withheld), the company has bluntly refused to benefit Egi with their community development budget. It has become obvious that responsible department shares the budget meant for the provision of social amenities to the gas producing communities”

Continuing, the statement said another multinational oil firm in the area had refused to carry out tree planting exercise in the area to promote reforestation. The youth group also accused the oil firm of always failing to pay what it termed “legitimate compensation for crude oil spills that have damaged economic crops “

Adding, the statement called on companies in the area to respect MoUs gone into with the community just as it also appealed to them to implement their local content drive in a manner that would benefit the community

“We also noticed that the employment of expatriate is abused with impunity. Situations where expatriates work as common supervisor and earn huge salaries while locals do the real job with infinitesimal take home”.
