C-River PPA settles rift

By John Ighodaro

CALABAR—The leadership tussle in the Cross River State chapter of the  Progressive People’s Alliance, PPA, seems to have been addressed by the national leadership of the party with Mr. Goddie Akpama having been declared as the recognized Acting State Chairman of the party in the state.

The National Chairman of the PPA, Mr. Larry Essien who was represented by the party’s South-South zonal publicity secretary, Mr. Stanley Edet, made the declaration weekend in Calabar at a meeting held to resolve the issue.

The tussle had been between Mr. Goddie Akpama Archibong and Malam Suleiman Offiong.

Mr. Paddy Ally has also been adopted as the state secretary of the party following the decision of the national leadership.

Mr. Larry Essien, while addressing members of the party at the Party’s secretariat weekend in Calabar, said Mr. Akpama has been adopted as the Acting State Chairman to oversee the party’s  activities in the state as they approach the 2010 Local Government council polls in the state and the 2011 general elections.

He said Mr. Akpama would be Acting Chairman until state congresses are held for substantive executive to be elected.

It will be recalled that the former state chairman of the party, Mr. Justine Asuquo recently defected to the PDP which necessitated the jostling for the state chairmanship position which in turn made the national leadership of the party to wade into the matter.
