Asaba airport begins operations May

By  Austin Ogwuda
Asaba—AS the euphoria to have Asaba International Airport put into use grows by the day, the state government has assured that come May this year, the airport would be delivered for use.

The assurance was made by the Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama, SAN, after being conducted round by the contractor handling the project, Mr. Uche Okpunor, during an unscheduled visit yesterday to the project site.

Utuama, who is overseeing the airport projects in the state, had told the Minister of Aviation, Mr Babatunde Omotoba, when he visited the state in January that “the effort of the contractor is commendable, it is moving beyond our expectations in terms of plan schedule.

“It is at the finishing stage, that is dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. We are optimistic that going by the current speed, the airport will definitely be delivered by April.

“The airport was scheduled to be completed within 24 months originally. We have not exceeded the 24 months.”

I think we are in the 18th month now. We are quite ahead of time in the completion.  From what I can see, I will say 80 per cent of the work has been done”.

The minister, while commending the state government for the gigantic project, said “I have gone through the work you have done up to date and I must tell you that I am very pleased. This is a good example of putting your money where your mouth is.”
