Why we embarked on strike, by AAU students

By Simon Ebegbulem
BENIN CITY—THE Student Union Government of the Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma in collaboration with the Part Time Student Association, Tuesday, insisted that the protest embarked upon by students of the university last week, was as result of the increase in school fees by the state government.

They described the allegation by the school authority that the protest was instigated by former Prudential aide, Professor Julius Ihonbvere, as diversionary, adding that after investigations, they discovered that some of the students who went on Television to indict Ihonbvere were not students of the institute.

Meanwhile, Manager  of Ihonbvere Foundation, Mr Nathaniel Osamede in a statement, said that though the university “has been shamelessly unkind to the Professor, who we know will continue to help the institution. Today’s managers are only temporary occupants of the office.

The institution is greater than all of them. If the AAU authority hurriedly issued a circular on fee increase without approval from government, it should blame itself, change its ways and not blame it on Prof Ihonbvere, who only went to the hospital to assist the indigent students.”

The students union in the statement, however, said “the general public should know that Prof. Ihonbvere has never held any meeting of any form with the students union leaders or  the students with the intension to instigating them to go on protest. We have never seen him neither had he incited the students into protesting.

“The protest embarked upon by the students was due to astronomical increase in school fees by the constituted authority” it stated.
