Strike paralyses LGs in Adamawa

By Umar Yusuf
Yola — Local Government Administration in Adamawa State has been grounded as members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, and the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, MHWUN, embarked on an indefinite strike action.

The industrial action by the two unions followed the expiration of a two-week ultimatum given to the state government to address some problems affecting the administration at the last tier of government in the state.

The grievances of the two unions range from inability of the councils to pay their members’ monthly salaries, even as most of the local government councils owe up to five months salary arrears.

Other grievances of the unions include alleged corrupt tendencies of elected local government council officers and the seemingly complete decay of the system among others.

When Vanguard visited Demsa, Yola North, Yola South, Girei, Fufore, Numan, Mayo-Belwa, the gates leading to the council secretariats were locked.
